What Signl covers, and what it does not

The 35 industry categories, the filters that exist, the signal types that are real, and the things people ask for that we do not have.

Updated Aug 25, 2026

Signl covers companies across 35 industry categories, four company-level signal types, four person-level signal types derived from contacts you have enriched, and verified decision-maker contacts. This page also lists what we do not have, because a coverage page that only says yes is not useful when you are deciding whether to build a play on us.

Industries

Thirty-five categories. Every one was checked individually against the live provider, so each returns real results rather than a silent zero.

Administrative and Support Services, Advertising Services, Automation Machinery Manufacturing, Banking, Biotechnology Research, Computer and Network Security, Construction, Consumer Services, Education Administration Programs, Entertainment Providers, Farming, Financial Services, Food and Beverage Services, Government Administration, Higher Education, Hospitality, Hospitals and Health Care, Human Resources Services, IT Services and IT Consulting, Insurance, Legal Services, Machinery Manufacturing, Marketing Services, Motor Vehicle Manufacturing, Oil Gas and Mining, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Professional Services, Real Estate, Restaurants, Software Development, Staffing and Recruiting, Technology Information and Internet, Telecommunications, Transportation Logistics Supply Chain and Storage, Utilities.

You do not have to type those exactly. Around 180 everyday synonyms resolve automatically: fintech and saas reach the right categories, logistics, trucking, 3pl and fleet management all reach transportation, and medtech, digital health and healthtech all reach health care.

An unrecognised value returns an unknown_industry error listing what we accept. Nothing is silently treated as an empty market, so a zero-result answer from Signl means the market really was empty for those filters.

Signal types that are real

Four company-level: funding, hiring, tech_adoption, and company_match, which is a current-state match rather than an event.

Four person-level: job_change, promotion, tenure_milestone and person_content. These are derived from contacts your account has already enriched, so they are a lens on your own contact history and not a feed of the whole market.

What we do not have

Stated plainly, because finding out later is worse.

Headcount growth over time. We filter on current headcount and current department headcount. A growth rate is not a signal type.

Market expansion. New office, new country, new region: we do not track these.

Market-wide leadership changes. We cannot tell you every company that just hired a VP of Sales. Person-level signals only exist for contacts you have already enriched.

Freshness on current-state matches. A company_match row has no event date, because nothing happened. It matched your criteria today. We store observed_at as null rather than stamping it with the time we found it, which means those rows are scored on fit alone.

A bulk export of the whole database. Signl answers queries when your agent asks. It is not a warehouse you download.

Intent data. We do not sell third-party intent, meaning inferred content-consumption signals from a publisher network. Everything here is an observable event or a current-state fact.

Consumer data. Business contacts only.

How fresh the data is

Every signal carries two dates: observed_at, when the event happened, and detected_at, when Signl first saw it. The gap between them is visible rather than asserted, which is the only honest way to answer a freshness question.

Discovery filters, meaning the ones that trigger a live market-wide search, query the provider at the moment your agent asks. Cached company firmographics are refreshed on a 90-day cycle, since industry and rough headcount are stable for months.

What a verified contact contains

Name, job title, email, an explicit email_verified flag, LinkedIn URL, phone where available, and the provider that supplied it. On the deep path you also get location, seniority and employment history.

If no verified email can be found, the request returns an enrichment_miss and no credit is charged. See no verified email was found for what to do next.

Tell us about a gap

If you need something on the "do not have" list, say so. The list changes based on what people actually ask for, and knowing which gap costs you a play is more useful to us than a feature request in the abstract.

Common questions

Which industries does Signl support?

Thirty-five categories, listed on this page. Each one was individually confirmed against the live data provider, so every value in the list returns real results. A large set of everyday synonyms maps onto them automatically, so you can type fintech, logistics or medtech and get the right category without knowing its formal name.

What happens if I search an industry you do not support?

You get an unknown_industry error listing the values we accept, and no search runs. This is deliberate. The alternative, returning an empty list, makes a typo look identical to a market with no companies in it, and that is the single most misleading thing a data tool can do.

Can Signl tell me which companies grew headcount last quarter?

Not as a signal. Signl can filter on current headcount and current department headcount, but growth over time is not one of the signal types we track. If you need a growth rate rather than a current number, that is a gap and it is fair to tell us so.
